In every city, churches form a vital spiritual ecosystem. Each congregation—large and small, traditional and contemporary—contributes to the relational and spiritual health of the community. Praying for the churches in our city is therefore more than a devotional practice; it is an act of unity, stewardship, and love.

Praying as the Lord commands

Scripture teaches that believers are members of one body (see 1 Corinthians 12). When we pray for other churches, we acknowledge this shared mission and ask God to strengthen every part—not just the one we personally attend. Such prayer helps diminish Satan's attempts at competition or isolation and instead builds a mindset of Kingdom cooperation.

Likewise, pastors and other church leaders regularly carry heavy burdens: preaching, shepherding, counseling, planning, and navigating complex social realities. Praying for them—across denominations—lifts their work before God and provides spiritual covering that impacts their resilience, wisdom, and joy.

Strengthening the whole Body of Christ

For more than ten years, Tucson carried a weekly rhythm of praying for churches in our city. This steady, faithful practice became part of our spiritual DNA, and many have commented on its absence these past four months while the Church of the Week program had been set before the Lord for fresh direction. During this season of transition, J17 Ministries has been working on updates to the questionnaire as well as other administrative adjustments. It is with great joy then, we confirm that starting in January 2026, you can once again expect to find a weekly church spotlight!

Moving from past to present to future

As important as it is to strengthen connections among the Body, J17 is sensing a call from the Lord to expand the weekly prayer reach to also cover schools and nonprofits. Imagine the impact our city's schools might experience as we intercede for them by name for the Father's protection, wisdom, and peace. Principals and other staff, educators, and the students themselves, all face any number of pressures and challenges on a daily basis. In the same way, many nonprofits stand on the front lines of meeting practical needs for the community, often working with limited resources. It is our privilege as Christ's redeemed to stand in the gap for these areas of influence, that all might come to know Jesus in a personal way. While J17 Ministries will spotlight different schools and nonprofits for prayer, along with the weekly church, it will ultimately be up to each congregation (and individual) whether and how to incorporate those elements into their services.

Opening the door for unity and shared ministry

When believers pray for one another, and for the city, collaboration becomes easier. Once-isolated congregations begin to work together on outreach, justice efforts, and community care, demonstrating a powerful witness to a watching world. Praying for the churches, schools, and nonprofits in our city is a simple practice with profound impact. It aligns hearts with God’s vision for a flourishing community. We hope you'll join us as we inaugurate 2026 in a fresh and new way!

Blessings,

Tasha Campbell, J17 Ministries Community Liaison
